Below, you'll find a list of some of the scholarship funds that have been created through the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. Click on a fund name, and you'll find details about the specific scholarship. As you'll see, many were created to honor the memory of a loved one. Some of the scholarships offer assistance to children of local employers, students who have chosen to attend a specific college or university, or students who have committed to a particular area of study. Each listing includes details for students who are interested in applying, as well as how you can contribute to that particular fund.

1st Source Scholarship Fund for Indiana University

The 1st Source Scholarship Fund for Indiana University was created to support the educational aspirations of children of employees of 1st Source who wish to pursue an undergraduate education at Indiana University. Ancilla College Fund

The Ancilla College Fund was established to provide scholarships for students attending Ancilla College. Thomas H. Barry Memorial Scholarship Fund

Parents of Thomas H. Barry, a Marian High School graduate, created the Thomas H. Barry Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of their son, who passed away far too early. The Thomas H. Barry scholarship is for Marian High School graduates who demonstrate potential and aptitude in art. Beaty Family Scholarship Fund

The Beaty Family Scholarship Fund supports the educational aspirations of an outstanding John Glenn High School senior who wishes to pursue an undergraduate education. Jack & Helen Benjamin Scholarship

Jack and Helen Benjamin

The Jack & Helen Benjamin Scholarship was established to support the educational aspirations of students from Mishawaka High School.  Both Jack and Helen Benjamin lived frugal lives, always with the mindset of being very generous benefactors to the young men and women of Mishawaka. They were never blessed with children of  their own and wanted to make a difference. The Big C Lumber Fund was created to support the educational aspirations of children of employees of Big C Lumber who wish to pursue an undergraduate education at an accredited, tax-exempt institution. Vivian Lee Borysiak Memorial Fund

Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Burkhart Scholarship Fund

The Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Burkhart Scholarship was created by Mrs. Janette Burkhart-Miller to assist students in the Leighton School of Business and Economics at IU South Bend complete their studies and remain on a path to graduate within four years. This award provides incoming sophomores in the Leighton School of Business tuition assistance at Indiana University South Bend. Dr. Richmond E. Calvin Scholarship Fund

Dr. Richmond E. Calvin was a professor at Indiana University South Bend for 30 years until his retirement in 2002. This scholarship fund was created to support African-American students at Indiana University South Bend pursuing an undergraduate degree in education; it serves as a lasting reflection of Dr. Calvin’s commitment to the educators of the future. Created by friends of Dr. Virginia B. Calvin, this scholarship fund was established in honor of Dr. Calvin’s work as superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation. It is awarded to a female graduate from the South Bend Community School Corporation who attends Ivy Tech. Chas. W. Cole Scholarship Fund

Charles W. Cole created this scholarship to support the educational aspirations of students who choose to pursue an undergraduate education at either Indiana University South Bend or Purdue College of Technology. The Coquillard Family Scholarship Fund was created by Mr. and Mrs. George Coquillard to support the educational aspirations of St. Joseph County students attending Ivy Tech Community College South Bend. Donald C. and Marion E. Currier Scholarship Fund

Donal C. Currier

Donald C. Currier was awarded a degree with distinction from the Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering in 1926.  Seventy-three years later, his wife Marion established the Currier Scholarship in his memory to benefit students from St. Joseph County pursuing engineering degrees from the Purdue University School of Engineering. The Warren A. and Marjorie S. Deahl Family Scholarship Fund was created to provide scholarships to St. Joseph County students who plan to attend a college or university in Indiana. The Officer Paul R. Deguch Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to honor Officer Deguch, a public servant who lost his life in the course of duty. This scholarship supports students pursuing an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice at Indiana University South Bend. The James R. The Michael and Constance Dillon Marian Legacy Fund was established to provide scholarships for students who attend Marian High School.  Recipients must demonstrate financial need and be a “legacy” (a student whose parent and/or grandparent is a Marian High School graduate). Frank and Lori Ermeti Scholarship Fund for IUSB


Frank and Lori Ermeti Scholarship Fund for IUSB was established to provide scholarships for students attending Indiana University South Bend who demonstrate financial need, are residents of St. Joseph County and graduated from either Saint Joseph or Mishawaka High School. Francis and Loretta Ernst Scholarship Fund

Thomas A. Gerencher Memorial Fund

Thomas A. Gerencher taught English at Saint Joseph High School for more than 30 years. This Memorial Fund provides an award for an outstanding English teacher AND a scholarship for an outstanding English student each year, honoring this legendary educator who inspired so many. Family members of Heather Hammer, a Marian High School student whose life ended much too soon, created the Heather Anne Hammer Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this generous young woman and to help deserving students obtain a Catholic college preparatory education at Marian. The Rose J. Horak Scholarship Fund was established by Joseph C. Horak in honor of his mother. Rose J. Horak appreciated the value of an education, believing that “readers are leaders, and leaders are readers.” This scholarship supports the educational aspirations of students who plan to pursue a full-time course of study at either a public or private institution, with preference given to students attending schools in either Indiana or Michigan. The Olga Logan Larimer Scholarship Fund for Good Shepherd Montessori was established to provide financial support for Latino/Hispanic children attending Good Shepherd Montessori School in South Bend. Tameka Luten Memorial Teacher Scholarship Fund


The Tameka Luten Memorial Teacher Scholarship Fund, which was created in memory of a seven-year-old South Bend girl who was tragically struck and killed by a school bus in 1993, was established to help local students pursue and advance a professional career in teaching.  This award provide scholarships for students attending Indiana University South Bend who demonstrate financial need, are residents of St. Joseph County and are in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in education. Charles Martin “Touch a Life” Scholarship Fund

Charles E. Martin, Sr.

The Charles Martin “Touch a Life” Scholarship was established by leaders in the African-American community to create a meaningful and lasting tribute to a remarkable man who mentored hundreds of students throughout this community. Friends and family of Katie McCloskey, an Adams High School graduate who was killed in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, created the Katie McCloskey Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this special young woman. The Michael J. McMahon Memorial Scholarship Fund was established with a bequest from Dr. Michael J. McMahon in appreciation for the excellent education, guidance, and support he received while attending Saint Joseph’s High School. The award provides tuition assistance to students attending Saint Joseph’s High School based on both academic potential and financial need. W. Scott and Janette Burkhart Miller Scholarship Fund

The W. Scott and Janette Burkhart Miller Scholarship Fund supports students at Stanley Clark School who demonstrate financial need. Anthony David Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund

Family of Anthony “Tony” Moore, a Marian High School graduate whose life was tragically cut short in an airplane accident, established the Anthony David Moore Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of this special young man. NAACP KeyBank Scholarship


The NAACP KeyBank Scholarship, which is administered by Indiana University South Bend, provides $1,000 in annual tuition assistance for an African-American student from St. Joseph County, who has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has been accepted into IUSB. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years. NAACP South Bend Branch Scholarship

The NAACP South Bend Branch Scholarship, which is administered by Indiana University South Bend, provides $1,000 in annual tuition assistance for an African-American student who lives in South Bend, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has been accepted into IUSB. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The first NAACP Scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2014, for the subsequent school year. South Bend NAACP President Rev. Robert O. Neeser/Cassady, Neeser & Brasseur Memorial Scholarship Fund
