Community Foundation Announces 2018 Play-Along with SBSO
Community Musicians Can Join Symphony for "Ode to Joy," August 18
For the sixth consecutive year, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County will host a Play-Along with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra as part of its August 18 concert at the Chris Wilson Pavilion at South Bend’s Potawatomi Park. Part of the 2018 Community Foundation Performing Arts Series, this opportunity is open to all community musicians who would like the chance to perform with a professional symphony.
This year’s Play-Along piece is the “Ode to Joy” section of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, arranged by former SBSO tubist Jerry Lackey. Alastair Willis, music director of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, will conduct. Both the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestras and The Music Village are supporting the 2018 Play-Along as performance partners, which means that these two organizations are recruiting and preparing groups of musicians who will be part of the Play-Along event. The Music Village plans to make parts available for nontraditional instruments such as ukuleles, banjos, and guitars.
In order to participate in this free event, community musicians must commit to two mandatory rehearsals and complete an online registration form. More details, the registration form, and music for all orchestral instruments can be found online at www.cfsjc.org/2018playalong. Space is limited, so musicians are encouraged to register early.
The Community Foundation Performing Arts Series is sponsored by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County’s ArtsEverywhere Fund, the Marjorie H. Wilson Charitable Trust Fund, the Indiana Arts Commission, and South Bend Venues, Parks & Arts. The South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestras and The Music Village are performance partners for the Play-Along event.
