$50,000 grant supports The Indiana Citizen

Non-partisan publication seeks to build a more engaged and informed citizenry

You’ve heard time and again about the importance of exercising your right to vote, but at least in the Hoosier State, the message hasn’t seemed to stick.

For decades, Indiana’s voter turnout has lagged far behind the national average and ranks consistently in the bottom ten. If it wasn’t for West Virginia, Indiana would have finished dead last during the most recent mid-term elections. The problem is clear: Too many Hoosiers are unengaged and ill-informed when it comes to our elections.

Enter The Indiana Citizen, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization, formed in 2018 to address Indiana’s civic health crisis by fostering a more informed, engaged Hoosier citizenry.

The organization provides voter tools such as The Indiana Citizen’s virtual ballot — showing voters the candidates who will be on their local ballots and providing useful links to nonpartisan candidate information.

But what happens in a non-election year?

With high-quality, nonpartisan news  dwindling as the number of journalists at the statehouse declines, The Indiana Citizen expanded into accountability journalism. In 2025, they’ve taken on a new project, One Heartbeat Away, examining whether Christian Nationalists have an agenda for Indiana.

The Community Foundation believes in the importance of fostering an informed, engaged Hoosier citizenry.  For more information, and to subscribe to their free newsletter, visit indianacitizen.org.
