New Day Intake Center Receives $250,000
Organization seeks to end chronic homelessness in South Bend
New Day Intake Center launched in 2020 with an audacious goal: To end chronic homelessness in South Bend. And now, as New Day moves forward with its low-barrier facility on Old Cleveland Road, it feels like they’re closer than ever before.
A $250,000 Special Project Grant from the Community Foundation will help make the project a reality.
The grant will help New Day create a space with 120 beds and amenities that promote the dignity of the center’s guests — including kitchen, laundry room, and space for mental health care.
As part of their mission, New Day offers support for individuals facing addiction, food insecurity, disability, and lack of access to health care.
New Day follows an evidence-based “Housing First” approach which provides individuals a safe, secure place to stay so they can then address underlying issues of addiction and mental illness.
Since 2020, New Day has served more than 800 guests and helped more than 75% of them find stable housing. Someday soon, it will be a lot more.
