A Senior Prom Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Checking in with Robinson Center's innovative Seniors on the Move program

When Robinson Community Learning Center received a $60,000 Senior Living grant for its “Seniors on the Move” program, the goal was simple: Help local seniors stay active and healthy.

As for how they reached that goal? Well, that was up to the seniors.

That’s just how Lu Ella Webster, Adult Programs Coordinator at RCLC, likes to do things. First, figure out what the people want to do, and then figure out how to bring it to them.

When the seniors started by asking if they could learn to cook healthy foods that still tasted good, Webster went out and found Chef Calvin Metts, Executive Chef at Notre Dame’s Morris Inn. Chef Calvin blew the group away with how good diabetic-friendly foods could taste.

After practicing in the kitchen, it was time to get moving. And how better than with a Senior Prom? Webster and her team put together a perfect and magical evening at the Morris Inn — complete with an elegant, healthy meal and an unforgettable party.

The evening had everything you’d expect from a prom, including the crowning of a King and Queen. Most of all, it gave the Center’s seniors a chance to practice healthy habits and keep moving. Webster reports that the group loved the event and can’t wait for what comes next.
