Miracle League Field Opens at Normain Park in Mishawaka

Every person – no matter their ability – deserves the chance to play baseball, to be part of a team, and to experience the magic of a cheering crowd behind them.

That’s exactly what will happen at Normain Park’s Miracle League Field, made possible in part by a $200,000 Special Project grant from the Community Foundation.

The field and the reimagined park are built to be completely accessible to individuals of all abilities, including cut curbs, wide walkways, and a picture-perfect baseball field built with a seamless rubberized surface.

Engineering students at the University of Notre Dame even built a bat machine that can be controlled at the push of a button, allowing those who can’t hold a bat to play baseball to stil take a swing.

“There are 80,000 disabled people living within 50 miles,” said Dick Pfeil, who’s been dreaming of this project for years. “Now, they have a place to play.”

Besides the baseball field, the newly imagined Normain Park includes new accessible playground equipment, a larger parking lot, and a one-of-a-kind splash pad that will entertain families of all ages and all abilities.
