Community Foundation Supports OneMoreVoice.com

Community Foundation, South Bend Regional Chamber, Others Back Statewide Voter Registration Effort

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County and the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce are partnering to support a new statewide initiative to help people register to vote, learn about candidates, and show up to vote in November.

In four of the last five elections, Indiana has been in the bottom 10 states for voter turnout. Indiana also ranks in the bottom 10 for civic literacy. OneMoreVoice.com, a nonpartisan initiative created by the Indiana Citizen Education Foundation, intends to change that through a coordinated, statewide campaign. With a driver’s license or state I.D., Hoosiers can visit OneMoreVoice.com and register to vote quickly and easily. The site also provides quality, nonpartisan information on the candidates who will appear on the ballot, based on the voter’s home address.

OneMoreVoice.com does not support a specific set of candidates or political platform. Its goal is simply to reach 750,000 of the state’s estimated 1.7 million unregistered voters and to provide the support they need to register, understand the issues, and show up to vote.

It’s an effort that Rose Meissner, president of the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, and Jeff Rea, president and CEO of the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce, both feel is critically important for our community.

“At a time when so much is dividing our country, it is refreshing to see leaders from both sides of the aisle unite around our common commitment to fostering a more engaged, informed Hoosier citizenry,” says Meissner.  “One More Voice is filling a critical need for credible, nonpartisan information on political candidates and key Indiana issues.”

“The basic right to vote is one of our founding principals in this country. Whatever we can do to encourage our citizens to become better informed about the candidates and issues impacting their lives is a great effort to support,” says Rea.

With the help of the St. Joseph County Public Library, the United Way of St. Joseph County, and other local organizations, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County and the South Bend Regional Chamber will be using their communications assets to reach out to unregistered voters about OneMoreVoice.com and the importance of voting between now and Election Day on November 3, 2020.
