Community Foundation Announces More than $500,000 in New Grants to Local Nonprofits

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County has announced more than $500,000 in funding that will support the missions of more than 20 local nonprofits, thanks to the Senior Living and ArtsEverywhere Initiatives.

REAL Services received a major award to help support the Safe at Home Program, a three-year initiative designed to increase safety and housing stability for income-limited older adults in St. Joseph County facing urgent, yet not ongoing needs that place them at risk of losing their independence or negatively impacting their health. Housing instability, lack of safety modifications, food insecurity, and managing of chronic conditions were highlighted as high needs among seniors in the community.

Safe at Home will help seniors safely age in place by delivering coordinated services such as safety modifications and minor home repair, emergency food assistance, yard clean up, appliance repair or replacement, and referrals to community support. Services will be delivered by certified staff and guided by in-home and social determinants of health assessments, with partnerships supporting safety modifications, emergency utility assistance, and food insecurity.

During the spring grant cycle, the ArtsEverywhere Initiative provided operating support for more than a dozen local organizations including the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Southold Dance Theater, The History Museum, and Downtown South Bend’s Mural Mania.

Additional funding will also support South Bend Civic Theatre’s development of a brand-new documentary series. “Inside the OUTside” will dive into stories of rehabilitation and reintegration after incarceration. Each episode of the documentary will present opportunities to have conversations at the Civic, along with additional nonprofit partnerships and collaborations.
